At Lord Street, we want our children to think like geographers and be in awe and wonder of our earth. They should also know about the diversity of places, people and human environments and understand the physical and human process that have an impact on the planet. As a result, they should be able to engage with current issues surrounding changes to the world they inhabit.
In Year 1 children build on the EYFS Understanding of the world finding out about people, places and the world around us. The children learn about their immediate locality so they learn about places around our school and grounds. They learn about familiar features such as houses, farms and shops building on their everyday experiences
Our children should be able to organise their knowledge, skills and understanding around the following learning:
These key concepts underpin learning in each milestone. This enables children to reinforce and build upon prior learning, make connections and develop subject specific language.
Through their work in Geography, children learn about their local area and compare this with other regions of the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.
There is a focus on location and place knowledge as well as geographical skills such as using maps, atlases and globes. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. In addition, children will study a variety of physical features using subject specific vocabulary.
Children will collect and analyse data from a range of sources and communicate this in a variety of ways, including maps, numbers and writing. Children will develop an understanding of what it means to be a global citizen encouraging a respect for other cultures and the environment.
