    Children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

    At Lord Street Primary School, we have a child-centred, inclusive approach to working with children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.  We put the child at the heart of everything we do, promoting high standards and the fulfilment of potential for all pupils, without exception.   

    We have a special educational needs team who work passionately to ensure the SEND needs of individual pupils are met, both academically and emotionally.  Ms Iddon is our SENDCo.  She works closely with parents and carers, children, class teachers and teaching assistants to ensure that those with special educational needs have full access to the curriculum and achieve their individual potential.  Quality-first teaching techniques are implemented for all pupils, alongside carefully selected small group and one-to-one interventions. These interventions are well-structured and targeted to ensure progress is made against individual outcomes.  The SEND team also ensure staff have regular and effective professional development opportunities.

    Positive relationships with parents underpin our work.  The SEND team are committed to supporting parents, liaising with them on a regular basis both formally and informally.  They also work effectively with outside agencies to support individual needs, and have built positive relationships with professionals from a variety of teams, including Speech and Language (SALT), Educational Psychologists (EP) and School Health.   Providing professional support to enable parents to liaise effectively with outside agencies is another key part of our work, ensuring we create a successful team around the child.

    We create a positive and supportive environment by providing an education that is appropriate to pupils' needs, removing barriers to learning and participation and promoting active engagement, healthy relationships and positive wellbeing for all pupils.  This is supported by our proactive approach to behaviour whereby we encourage, model and reinforce desirable, positive behaviours from all pupils. 

    We aim to understand individual pupil's learning needs by using the graduated approach of 'assess, plan, do, review'.  Assessment is regular and purposeful and is informed by parents and carers and other professionals, as well as the pupil themselves.  This rigorous and thorough process enables class teachers to make informed professional decisions about the best next steps for teaching each child.

    The Children & Families Act 2014 and the updated SEND Code of Practice (2020) have highlighted many changes within SEND, including the introduction of each school providing a Local Offer. Our Local Offer can be found below and provides information on our school provision for children with SEND.
